Signs of Depression

An individual with mild depression may experience many of the same symptoms as a person with a severe form of the disease.   • Persistent sad or anxious feelings
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Lost interest in pleasurable activities
  • Fatigue and lowered energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts
  • Aches or pains not helped by treatment

If an individual is experiencing these symptoms, he or she should consider getting treatment for depression.

Major Depression

According to NIMH, major depression is a serious mental illness that affects every aspect of a person’s life, including work, sleep, meals and leisure activities. A person may have only one episode of major depression or, as is more likely, several episodes in a lifetime. Symptoms last for two weeks or longer and show a significant change from the way the individual acted and felt previously. An individual with major depression is not able to function in a normal way and may feel unable to even get out of bed.

Minor Depression

Individuals with minor depression experience symptoms for two weeks or longer that do not meet all of the qualifications for major depression. A person’s emotional state may be altered, but the individual can still continue with normal day-to-day activities. Individuals with minor depression who go untreated may progress to major depression.
